In truth pretty much every song on this album is really good, just straight up quality rock. I think this one remains the most epic and each part is really perfect for conveying the emotion of the song. Besides it's a long song for a Green Day song. You gotta give em props for doing something different and big. They tried it again on down the album with homecoming, however I don't believe it was executed as well. Though it was cool to have dirnt and tre singing on different sections. Still I think this song kind of sets up the whole story and feel for what you are going to hear on the rest of the album. - LordJosh

Epic from start to finish. Part 1 Is a great establishment for the story and the character whilst Part 2 describes the pain of living where he does in Part 3 everything goes crazy and our character expresses his emotions by just saying "I don't care". Part 4 is a really great harmonic sounding piece leading up to the climactic part 5 where everything goes insane.. Altogether an amazing peice of music and will go down as one of the greats!

This song is just so good... I could hardly speak when I first heard it! This entire song just speaks to me in so many ways! It draws me in with the beginning half, the second half is just so calming to me and it makes me want to listen to the rest of it. This was executed very well and each section had it's charms. It is one of the best songs on the album. The whole album is very good thought.

This list is pretty strange, but all the songs on this album are fantastic! This song is just better than all the other ones. It is so balanced, and the rock opera feel is so welcome. The instrumentals are fantastic, and the voice of Billy Joel fits this songs mood perfectly. The lyrics are deep, and totally make the story. Over all this song is just perfect.

This is truly the most powerful and meaningful Green Day song of all. The vocals are spot on as well as the bass and drums. The Dearly Beloved section is the best by long ways...1. Jesus of Suburbia 2. Letterbomb 3. Holiday 4. Homecoming 5. Wake Me Up When September Ends...my top 5 off of this album.

At first I didn't think this song would be good because of the title. Then when I was going for a bike ride I decided to give it a listen, might as well listen to SOMETHING, right? ... I loved it. THIS SONG made Green Day my favorite band. God, I love this song.

When I first heard American idiot years ago I didn't really listen to this song much. I've gotta say it's my album favorite this time around. It's long but has a lot of different styles and it's just awesome.
