    The guy's been doing what he actually loves since '85. He's not as popular as he should be but Skrillex who's above him actually took much from Richard David James. And kudos to Aphex for "coming out of shadows" and releasing Syro and getting a Grammy for best Electronic Album of the Year in 2014. If you've ever heard of Ambient you can thank Aphex Twin and Bryan Eno for being the greatest pioneers of the genre. Aphex is also a major pioneer of Acid and Drum and Bass, and don't say that Drukqs isn't one of the most creative albums ever... Richard you're my favorite artist period. Thanks for sharing your passion and ingenious work with the world

    Props to RDJ! Not only has he been doing this since the mid-1980s, he's also capable of doing his own code-wrangling, knows how to build stuff when the available hardware doesn't suffice, and can do anything from total chill ambient to ear-wrecking industrial racket...and everything in between. Pretty revolting that he's stuck here behind Deadmau5 and Skrillex, with them being the one-trick products that they are; AFX is capable of the entire spectrum of electronic music! And I doubt you'll be hearing the London Sinfonietta's arrangement of 'Bangarang' anytime...ever, while Aphex Twin's already been there, done that!

    Problem for me is that when he's good, he is the most influential, "ahead of his time" artist out there (bar BOC maybe). When he's bad (his drill'n'bass stuff, for example) he's unlistenable. To expect people to buy his more experimental stuff is asking for trouble. SAW 85-92 was a breath of fresh air. SAW 2 was, in my opinion, more about marketing (titles for the tracks? Nope, we'll make them "textures". Good luck with that) and making money. The actual record (which wasn't very good IF EVERYONE IS BEING HONEST) was secondary Really. Stick with that remix thing he did instead.

    Daft Punk: okay mainstream electropop... Catchy... Owl City: Fireflies is supposed to be this whiny little false artist's masterpiece, but it's just one wimpy fantasy amongst all the other songs that this guy come up with, not to mention that his musicality is uninspiring, basic, terrible. The keyboards sound like garbage, everything is so thin. Aphex Twin: Every one of his album is a distinctive and mysterious journey of raw emotion embedded with style, colors, textures. The variety of soundscapes is off the bounds and none of them sound like they belong on Earth. Every song speaks to you, inspires you.     Its absurd to put skrillex or deadmau5 above this dude. He truly is a living talent with electronic music techno, acid, ambient you name it this dude can do it he is an early pioneer of this stuff and a big influence to electronic artists on the charts. The stuff he put out in the 90s shouldn't even exist in the 90s almost as if he came from the future. He can have a song with 100 different noises and they all seem to be perfectly placed where they should be genius.

    Skrillex is two places above Aphex Twin? Are you kidding me? Skrillex wishes he was a fifth to the fifth power as talented as Aphex Twin is. This guy could have a genre named after himself. He's been at every end of the spectrum from nightmare noise jungle like Come to Daddy to emotional piano solos such as April 14th. Did you know that Syro comes in an album cover which itself is literally the list of what your dollar goes into when buying it? It folds out in like 8 pages.

    Daft punk was okay, Deadmau5 is awesome, Skrillex is meh, and the Prodigy are good in their own way. But Aphex Twin? Best of all time. The only time I literally cried tears of joy was after hearing selected ambient works 85-92. And I don't cry very much at all. Then you've got "I care Because You Do," another great album well ahead of it's time. Richard D. James has the distinction of being one of the first albums to use software synthesizers (look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about). Then there's Come to daddy, a hilarious yet beautiful EP with a laugh-out-loud, disturbing music video. After that, we have the glorious WindowLicker. Well ahead of its time, it fused Techno, Lounge, Jazz, and Glitch with ease, and had another funny music video directed by the same person who did Come To daddy. On to the 21st century, and we have the double album Drukqs, the Analord EP series, and recently, the excellent Syro EP that resembles Selected Ambient Works. So that's ... more - ryn0

    Literally carried the whole electronic genre on his back... His sounds and rhythms are so unique, and he puts more effort into his music than any other electronic artist. If you say you like electronic music and you don't know Richard D. James, I am ashamed of you. Although he is less known than the other top three, he deserves to be at least #2 (Daft Punk may be more impactful, but I still like Aphex Twin better).

    I know these guys didn't put Skrillex and Deadmau5 above Aphex yo. Shrillex is cool for what he does, but I don't think he's near top 5. Deadmau5 is just overrated in general, his music isn't that good outside a couple standout tracks. Aphex arguably set down the foundations for what most of these guys do, and probably did it better than any of them. Daft Punk easily deserves #1 however. show more comments darr;
