Metallica may have been more popular, Megadeth may have been more lauded, Anthrax may have been more accessible, but no one reigns (pun intended) like Slayer does over thrash and metal's perspective in general. Tough choice, lot of great bands that can realistically be considered the greatest. I went with Slayer because I think they define what metal is more than any other band. Slayer has an energy that can't be replicated by so called "death" metal bands produce nothing but double bass and cookie monster vocals. They have brutal speed and talent on all instruments with great riffs and grooves. Sorry, Slayer fanboys. Metallica were there before you. I am a huge fan of Slayer's first 5 - atmospheric and diverse as hell - but Metallica define what thrash is and isn't, not Slayer. Yes, they have they're style, and they are without question in the top 4 thrash bands on the planet, and span generations like Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth, but as great as their first 5 are, they're not as great as Metallica's first 5. It's hard to admit when you love a band that they're not on equal footing
