I get why this movie is high on this list, but this movie is not nearly as overrated today as it was when it first came out. Unlike many overrated movies that should be higher on this list than Avatar(The Dark Knight, Joker, Forrest Gump, Django Unchained, any Avengers film, any Star Wars film), Avatar's hype was not because of any overrated characters. Does anyone think that Jake Sully, Neytiri, or Grace are among the greatest characters ever? The CGI was the only reason Avatar got so overrated. The CGI could of made any film huge, regardless of how bad the plot is. Howard the Duck and Battlefield Earth would of been very huge if they had Avatar level CGI before Avatar. Avatar was the most overrated film 10 years ago, but the hype that surrounded Avatar had already died down. It's probably because nowadays, even terrible movies can have major CGI.

I saw the movie. It wasn't great. Good, not bad, but not great. There're some good action scenes, directing skills and CGI, yet story and general tone and prevention of boring people wasn't very worked on. A 7.9/10 by IMBb is understandable, I'd give it a 6.9/10, yet does it really deserve a 2.8 BILLION dollar box office success? I mean, good movies don't get this much credit, yet Avatar is the MOST MONEY-MAKING MOVIE OF ALL TIME! Some of my favourite movies like The Shawshank Redemption, The Return of the King and Die Hard were great, yet they got a 58 Million, 376 Million and 366 million. And all of those movies got WAY higher ratings, Redemption even scoring highest on the top 250 on IMDb, LOTr getting 9th and and Die hard only scoring 8.2/10, but, better movies deserve more recognition.

Avatar is one of the most overrated movies ever with an unoriginal plot and really annoying and boring characters. Critics only really praised the film because the impressive visuals that overshadowed their judgement of the rest of the movie. The message the film sends is so clichéd and it was brought up by something really stupid that the humans did to Earth so that they can just attack other innocent beings throughout the galaxy to get what they want. The film also relies heavily on CGI making the Na'vi not look so very good in appearance and the action scenes were not very good, especially the battle at the end which was resolved poorly.

This is a movie you have to see in 3D. It's just lost without it. The non-3D (let us call it flat) version of the movie just lacks a lot of the visual thrill of the 3D version, and if you only saw the flat version it would be easy to think this movie overrated. My only objection to the movie was the blatant rip-off of the artwork of Roger Dean. Absolutely no credit given to him, just as Cameron did to H.R. Giger in Aliens, yet those familiar with Roger Dean's artwork will recognize it immediately in this movie.

I am not saying that Avatar was a bad movie. I just do not understand how a live-action version of Ferngully (let's be honest, that is what it is) can garner such acclaim and become the biggest most-successful film of all time. It was entertaining. That is as far as I would go. I find the overabundence of CGI a little distracting and the storyline common. Why was this nominated for so many awards while truly brilliant and challenging and original films were overlooked?

This may very well become under-rated if all this trash talk of it continues. I love this movie. The CGI was so well detailed (not a single creature looked alike --- well done). The characters were real. The villain was respectable to the point you had to tip your hat when he went out. It's not over-rated at all. You just don't get it!

I sat in the movie theater completely bored out of my mind for three hours. For a movie about blue aliens, in another planet, in the distant future, this was just unoriginal and uninspiring. Might as well go watch Dances with Wolves or Pocahontas, same themes but done correctly.

Absolutely overrated. It was one of the best try not to cringe challenges. The whole movie just felt like a demonstration of their CGI skills. The plot was over dramatised and exaggerated.
