This was the year that California, the most populated and economically powerful state in the United States, gained full statehood. It ocurred on September 9th after California was part of the United States for roughly two years - which was the record quickest time for a U.S. state to gain statehood. The Compromise of 1850 began California's reign of being the most powerful economic and political force in the far West. This reign led up to California having the largest economy of the United States and the fifth largest economy of the world. Aside from California gaining statehood, Australia's first university as well as one of the world's leading universities, University of Sydney was founded. In addition, the hippopotamus Obaysch arrived at the London Zoo. This was the first hippopotamus Obaysch seen in Europe since Ancient Rome and the first seen in Great Britain since the prehistoric times. Overall, this was an iconic year. - crazycoollady1999
