Powerful album, not an easy listen at all, this is art. He is able to capture the struggle's of a black youth in the streets and use the metaphor of a caterpillar transforming into something as beautiful as a butterfly as a perfect analogy. Depicts struggles of depression, self medication, racism and police brutality. It has a lot of influences but the sound is uniquely Kendrick's. 10/10

The greatest album of all time? Probably not, but its pretty darn close. And yes, this is a rap album from the 2010s, a decade notorious for mumble rap/trap. This album is a work of art, not just a collection of songs. It tells the story of Kendrick himself, going through his struggles with fame after good kid, m.A.A.d. city. That may sound cliche, but Kendrick handles it in such a way that makes it sound fresh. This album also has tons of jazz and funk influence, with contributors such as George Clinton. Every song sounds different. These include disco-rap if there ever was such a thing (King Kunta), glorious jazz-rap that is now a BLM anthem (Alright), possibly the most depressing rap song of the 21st century, if not all time (u), to a conclusion with an imagined conversation between Kendrick and Tupac himself. This album is a must-listen.

To pimp a butterfly might not be as easy to listen to as gkmc but it makes up for it with its rich themes and jazz incorporation. And also from Wesleys theory down to mortal man there is literally no filler, no skip panos tracks even including the interludes. This album focuses on themes of fame leading to depression and feeling empty then realizing that your fortune and newly discovered fame has led you to abandoning your home where your loved ones still fight a continuous battle against poverty gangs and discrimination. To close it all off he asks the audience that if his life went wrong or he made a bad decision would you still love him and his music? After that track started to fade he continued with his letter that he had been reading pieces of at the end of each son only to realize that it was dedicated to Tupac. Then, something even more surprising, Tupac responds! Kendrick and Tupac talk back and forth about philosophical views and just life itself. This is, quite honestly the ... more

Nothing is on the level of depth, meaning and complexity as To Pimp A Butterfly. The several concepts and philosophies in the lyrics along with an intricate reason behind every single beat and rhythm withing the allbum, historic. This is not just a rap album, it is a sublime piece artwork, a masterful story and a movement all in one. Kendrick Lamar goes throught the depths of his own life, society, Lucifer and of the people around him. The several genres of sound used all with a meaningful reason. The number of concepts and messages he explores is unfathomable. Honestly, no album could come close to this legendary work. There is just far too much to talk about in this album, one can only go listen and learn for themselves. This the Greatest Album of All Time. No Question.

To Pimp a Butterfly hits you in a completely different way when you analyze and break it down piece by piece. This is a masterpiece, and easily the greatest rap album of all time. When you can relate to the topics very heavily, you start to take notice how much care, passion, and emotion were put into this record to give us some amazing commentary on society, storytelling, and symbolism through intelligent lyricism and wordplay. You can tell a story and the summary of the album just by the titles of each track, as well.
This album will not get the proper recognition until Kendrick is all set and done. People often don't recognize the legacy of something until the truly digest everything. As Jay-z said, "They say they only miss you once you're dead or you're gone".This album is the best album of all time in my opinion. Kendrick attacks controversial topics fearlessly and from a variety of angles. We live in a time when stating your opinion is harder than ever. It is much easier to offend people than it was 20 years ago. Kendrick manages to avoid controversy and still get his point across in regards to the highly sensitive topic of racism. As a white, middle-class male, I should HATE this album. Yet, Kendrick presents his points in such an elegant, clear, fair way, that it makes me love this album and his perspective. Along with racism, Kendrick tackles problems such as the thirst for worldly pleasures, whether it be wealth(Wesley 's Theory) or sex(These Walls).The story ... more

There is really nothing like this album. In 20 years, once nostalgia sets in, this is going to be revered in the top 3 rap albums of all time.

This album shows how music is an art. He makes the listener constantly think and feel not by just his words but music. His philosophy of being African American in America is fascinating. I have no doubt that this album is a timeless classic and will be talked about not just in rap. Kendrick put his name up with the great Artists all time, not just in music. This album will be studied by historians 100 years from now. It is amazing to experience this album when it came out.

this is the best rap record of all time if you don't think so dedicate your self into more hip hop then come back to this album and you will agree

This is the first Hip Hop album in which there is no song I ever want to skip. Before hearing this album my favorite rap albums were Ready to Die and The Marshall Mather's LP both which have tracks I might want to skip. I first listened to TPAB all the way through in study hall I was working but so many times would stop just to listen. By the time Mortal Man came on I was in the bathroom. Tupac is my favorite rapper of all time and it was amazing to hear these two talk, by the end I just sat there in silence for about te minutes with chills down my neck.
