It's backwards compatible with PS1 (with much faster loading screens by the way), It was the first console to play DVD movies and most importantly, It had a pletherol of great games that could satisfy everyone. casual gamers? Yup! Hardcore gamers? Yup! Mature games? You got it! Kids games? The PS2 has it all. Not only that but it managed to survive the entire of at the time next gen consoles giving it a 13 year life span.
