Super Metroid and Prime as a whole had quite the big differences. For me however, Super is the number one for me. The ability to run and obliterate everything in sight just made me feel so powerful. As well as this, the map size of this game was just perfect. I loved the challenge of some of the bosses I faced the first time I played through this game. It brought so many new things to the table that would leave a lasting impact on the series. It's funny because you may not think of it as a great game in the process. But after the amazing final boss that you face, which by the way is easily the best in the series, and you get back on to your ship with the set timer, you sit back and realize the masterpiece you just played. This is the best game I have ever played.

This game is strong in every aspect. The graphics are great, there is a high variety of environments, the overall ambiance is dark and creepy. The soundtrack is fantastic, it's one of the best Metroid soundtrack.The gameplay is excellent, the game doesn't force you do go to a specific area (this is what I didn't like in Zero Mission, you always knew, where to go, and it didn't give you that feel of free exploration). Here you can freely explore until you stuck somewhere and you need to find a specific weapon / equipment to continue. The game always helps somewhat and this is my favorite thing about SM. Such an artistic masterpiece. The music is haunting and perfectly fits the atmosphere. The backgrounds are well concieved and often creepy. The action is top notch. The control is perfect for what it is. And the story is brilliant beyond belief. In my opinion, it's not only one of the best games for the SNES, but one of the best games ever made. Also, it's like an updated and perfected version of metroid 1... But also a sequal. Metroid Fusion and Zero mission were done in the same style and were really good... Super Metroid takes the cake. The direct sequal 'Other M' was really good but people hate it because it was heavily story focused... Which is fine by me. My only agreement with complaints is why she wouldn't use her powers without permission. They could have easily rewrote a better reason than to save face with a jerk commander she had a secrect crush on. The primes to me were mediocre and deviated largely from the main franchise. Super metroid has everything that fans love about metroid. Every little detail that could have been ignored done wrong, nintendo did right. It's the little useless details that makes super metroid great along with it's solid gameplay and story. Freedom in this game cannot be expressed enough. I heard it's even possible to fight all bosses in reverse order than it's intended to. Of course this game is not for everyone, but if you don't like super metroid, I find it hard to see how you like metroid at all.

Beaten the game again a few days ago 100% in 3:11h. And, what should I say, again I loved every second I played. It surrounds you during the hole session. The amazing music, the fluend gameplay, the well balanced difficulty, the amazing graphics for snes, the different Areas all with there own character, the more skills samus get if deeper you dive into the game. I own this game about 21 years. Don't know how often I bet this game, but it's always a pleasure and absolutly satisfying. Remember my best clear time was 1:56h 100% without any cheatin. This is my favorite metroid game of all time.

I'm sorry, but this is definitely better than Prime. Not saying Prime is a bad game, Super Metroid is just better, for multiple reasons. Firstly, the 2D platforming style suits the series much better. Though it may be less immersive, it is also harder to get lost in the giant maze that is Brinstar than in Tallon IV. The upgrades felt more satisfying. The music was more subtle and atmospheric. It was just simply better. Again, not saying that Metroid Prime is a bad game, just that Super Metroid is the best game.

Probably the best game on the SNES, and quite possibly the best Metroid game of the lot. While there is no question the the other Metroid games released after this were more sophisticated, any old school gamer will echo my sentiments that this is the best Metroid game.
