This the only genre that makes me feel like I'm actually living through the emotions and horror of the movie with the characters. Horror has been on a really creative upswing since 2000, especially the last 10 years. A huge improvement over the 90's which seemed mired in mediocrity, at best. Films like the Conjuring, Get Out, It Follows, Drag Me To Hell and the Babadook have breathed life back into the industry.

I'm not saying this genre should be #1, but I still love this genre. My favorite horror movies are ones that are based on Stephen King books like The Shining, Cujo, Christine, IT, Maximum Overdrive, The Stand, Misery, The Mist, or Pet Sematary.
