I grew up with this breed and they are not bad dogs. They HAVE to be socialized. That's one of the most important things a chow owner should do. It's been my personal experience that most people have trouble reading them. It's weird, but I've noticed that people don't seem to notice the signals the dogs give when they're upset. Maybe it's because they're fluffy so people let their guard down. Maybe it's because they're generally less demonstrative than breeds like Labrador Retrievers. I wonder if anybody else has noticed this? I think maybe their bad reputation comes from owners who don't socialize their dogs and people who aren't familiar with the breed misunderstanding them.

It is true that without socialization these dogs aren't the greatest but assuming you've done your research this dog is going to be an amazing family pet. The one part that gets people is that these dogs NEED be outside interacting to learn how to be with other dogs starting from a young age. - DogLuv-R
