A good guy pushed into a truly ungrateful role and slowly succumbing to his jealousy and resentment. He's done a lot for the group, but in the end it's always Rick who takes the glory (and the woman he loves). His best friend comes back from the dead and in a way takes everything from him. He is a central member of the group, and yet he is more alone than most others.I feel he's a great character because he is an antagonist you can really relate to. Also, he gets under Rick's skin like no other. This was the character death I was most upset about, and they didn't deal with its impact quite as much as I feel they should have.I feel Daryl can't really fill the position Shane had with Rick. To me, the 7th best character. His characters development was quite good and I felt that he should not have died a bit early. His death was somewhat needed as he was calm after the fight in episode 10 and in the beginning of episode 12 accept when Lori says something when he repaired something. I would have substituted his death for Me rle's against the governor and develop his character for three seasons as for season 1 he was quite a good guy except maybe near the end and in season 2 he was like a villain and in Season 3 I would make him more like an anti-hero redeeming himself in battle and near the end of the season, changing his character completely after Lori's death making him reckless enough to face the governor, kill most of his men but dying by the governors hands so that Merle survives. He was such a great apocalypse character. Shane was the best for the group, he wanted to protect everybody in particular Lori and Carl and he was the Rick's best friend.He really thought Rick was dead and he saved him with the bed against the door in the hospital.Only he loved Lori, maybe he shouldn't make love with Lori I think he only should protect her for Rick but Shane believed that after all in a dead world, try to make happy someone. That's why he made love with Lori and forcelly when Rick came back everything was destroyed to Shane but he tried to protect the group and no one trust him. I'm very sadly he died, I prefered Lori and Rick forgive him and Shane accept to follow Rick Shane served a similar position to the Governor for me in some ways. During his time, Shane was the most interesting character on the show, and I was inclined to agree with most of his decisions. His friendship with Rick was great. He might have been one of the group's most valuable assets if Lori hadn't thoroughly screwed up his head. It's tragic, really. By Season 5, Rick has surpassed Shane in the "warped" morality department. Shane was just ahead of his time. Poor bastard.
