He is completely misunderstood. Bell is the only one he gets him. Okay, so from the beginning. He became the dark one to stop a horrible war and save his son. He never meant to let his son go and he spent around 200 years trying to get him back. That's a long time, he cared a lot. He might have done some bad things but he was trying to get back to his son. When he meets Bell he loves her so much, even if he messed up by making her leave. But, that's the thing, for someone to be my favorite character, and I thinks it's the same for a lot of people, based on the first three. They have to do some bad things. A character who is good at heart but does some bad things makes their character deep, and makes them awesome. That's why I hate Neal/ Baelfire, even though Rumpelstiltskin spent about 200 years looking for him, he couldn't forgive him. First of all he's played by Scottish legend Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, The Full Monty) His character from the beginning has been the most nuanced, complex, morally grey character to ever grace my T.V./ computer screen. Recently however Rumplestiltskin has been at the brunt of a viscous hate campaign by the very writers who created him! The show runners have deliberately been sabotaging his character lately to prop up bland fan favorites the Evil Queen and Captain Hook. It started with killing his son; his whole motivation for the curse and everything he did as The Dark One. They completely negated his beautiful redemption arc by bringing him back to life, then subjecting him to torture, pain, and rejection, over and over. The writers have ruined a character that Robert worked hard (and still works hard) to be three demensional by painting him in the most unsympathetic light possible. All this because they wanted the young teen demographic to drool over Hook and woobify Regina.

First of all, how do you NOT love any character played by Robert Carlyle. Secondly, his character had so much depth during the first three seasons and even though he's done horrible things, he spent 200 years trying to look for his son and everything he did was for his son. But, at the end of season 3 his son got killed and it went downhill from there. Third, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE his contrast between enchanted forest rumplestiltskin and storybrooke mr gold. Like, it is absolutely perfect and I LOVE seeing the sarcastic and funny rumplestiltskin, as well as his cool, laid back counterpart in storybrooke. Also, the way he says "dearie" is HILARIOUS.

I love this guy! he's the most powerful character in the whole show (still alive that is because of hades and I'm not counting zeus because it was less than a minute of screen time) he's the funniest and the smartest. His style is classy as all hell, and his personality and attitude are just amazing! Also love Robert Carlyle. And its true what he says in season 4, he always wins. In the end, I dare anyone to say in any instance where rumple did not win.

Best character by far. Comedy and a dark past mixed into a single story. Completely misunderstood and attractive in his own strange way. Not the main villain and yet the most feared, Regina is no match as even she is shown to fear the man.

He is simply awesome, his character is brilliant and I love the actor... such a talented man. He would have made an awesome Severus Snape too, I'm sure. Anyway, Rumpelstiltskin/Mr Gold (in fact I prefer the Mr Gold side of him) is my absolutely favorite character ever, even though I used to have a massive crush on August W. Booth too ;-)

Best character but also great actor playing him. I wouldn't have watched all seasons if it had not been for Robert Carlyle/Rumpel. (Regina a close second as love her too). My favourite scenes are when these two are on the screen.

His loyalty to his son amazes me. I actually didn't even like him until I saw the episode with Belle. I love how he's always seen as tough and evil, but in reality he's a coward that just wants his son back.

Love love love rumple he's my favourite with Regina a close second. Robert Carlisle does such a good job no-one else could do the role. He's fab as Mr gold but when he's the impish rumple that's just a different level he really is in a league of his own X
