I would not live anywhere south or west of Fredericksburg. As a native northerner, I can clearly notice the amicability decline and hostility increase as you venture into more rural parts of the state. They do NOT want you here. I got that message loud and clear through verbal comments, shunning, stereotyping, lying, and backstabbing at work and school. They hate the north and northern people. In fact, they were taught to hate the north, for what ungodly reason I don't know. Maybe it's envy, jealousy, ignorance, unjustified pride? In their minds, they're still fighting the civil war and anyone who does not fit the fake "southern country" mold will be outcasted and treated rudely. Many never leave the state and therefore are uncultured. Mix that in with an undeserving sense of arrogance and you have Virginia!

Virginia definitely is NOT friendly. The urban areas (NoVa, Richmond, Tidewater) are just like most other large cities in the Northeast; not rude per se but fast-paced, unsociable, aloof, smug and elitist. On the other side, areas like the Shenandoah Valley have some of the most small-minded, racist, miserable, ignorant, filthiest (literally), most socially and culturally backwards people in the world that act like cave men and yet are extremely proud. And these folks really are RUDE! If youre an outsider, you probably wont feel welcomed in either of these areas, and youll have to work real hard and be very extroverted in order to make friends. People WILL NOT extend their friendship or try to get to know you if YOU dont make the first move (and even that may not be effective). Only the far southern and southwestern parts of the state (i.e. Danville, the Roanoke-Redford area, Bristol) are probably the only areas where people are half-way friendly.
