But the real reason why Lotso is obviously more evil is because Hopper, while being a selfish brutal and sadistic psychopath, does care about his mother since he kept his promise to her by not killing his brother. Hopper represents the capitalist class of the real world, aka the rulers who want to keep us, the proletariat, down. A Bugs Life was an amazing socialist commentary and the scene where the ants stuffed Hopper into a cannon was reminiscent of when the French peasants guillotined the decadent French monarchs who lived lavishly and stole the fruits of the French peasants labour. His death made me sad because I really liked him but it also sends an important message that the only way to deal with the bourgeoisie/government is to kill them.

Hopper is such a perfectly terrifying villain. Early shots of him are always filmed from a low angle. His design is incredible. Watch the movie at look at the way he moves his arms, walks, and blinks; every act he takes is done with the intent to impose fear on those around him. He makes Atta feel small, stupid, and insignificant by talking down to her, subtly imposing physical dominance, and threatening her when necessary. The grasshoppers flying sound like a helicopter raid, and that's no coincidence. His motivation stems from fear of uprising and what he believes to be a need to keep the lower class in line He is a ruthless and realistic dictator.

Hopper is a tyrant who wants to run the kingdom for good! He gives the ants one last chance to get him a great offering to benefit him and his army, but mainly him. As the movie progresses, he gets impatient and decides to sabotage their kingdom by trying to make the ants his slaves, especially Atta and Flik. By doing these things, Hopper is implying he is an obvious dictator with no compassion for others, not even his allies. He is way more dominant than all the ants since he is a giant grasshopper and uses fear and manipulation as his main strengths.
