It frankly astounds me that this isn't on the list, over such items as Beauty and the Beast - but then again, I suppose it isn't one of Disney's most instantly recalled films for most people. This film has it all - it shows the callous murder of Quasimodo's mother, his near-drowning as a baby, his cruel parental figure in Judge Frollo... god, it's horrendously sad. Frollo raises him believing that due to his hunchbacked, incongrous appearance, he is worthless. He is imprisoned for pretty much all of his youth in Notredame, and dreams of being accepted by the exciting, enticing outside world. When he finally manages to sneak outside to a carnival, he is publicly humiliated by all - under the orders of his own "father"-figure, Frollo. He is painfully tied up like an animal, ridiculed, and spun around on a wheel while pelted with vegetables people throw at him. It's a crushing scene. I haven't seen most Disney movies - I've only seen 16, but this one was the saddest for me. I haven't seen The Lion King or Bambi (although when I saw the clip from The Lion King it made me cry), The Hunchback of Notre Dame was the saddest for me. The scene where Quasimodo hugs Esmerelda made me tear up and bawl, and the scene where Frollo passes away I felt so bad for him and cried and when I thought Quasimodo was going to die I was so sad and cried. Just watched this movie today. I got misty-eyed whenever Quasimodo cried. He was judged, publicly humiliated and abused. Frollo was willing to search the whole city to find Esmeralda and kill her. He burnt down the house of an innocent miller who had a wife and daughter. I nearly cried when Quasimodo thought that Esmeralda had died.

This movie had me crying since the start! It is sad to have absolutely no one there in the world for you. And people judge Quasimodo on his looks only! Its not like he chose to be that way, he is just another one of God's masterpieces. In the end he still doesn't find love, but at least he is free in the end.

This movie countlessly broke my heart. This movie is a movie that accepts that life isn't such a happy ending. The bad guy is defeated, but the good guy/protagonist doesn't get his wish - the girl. Filled me with wonder and awoke me. It touched me, it felt real.

This movie is so sad, the end bit is probably the saddest bit but it defonatly makes you cry it should at least be second or third, not ninth! They are such bullies, he finds his true love, she kisses someone, he saves he, he puts them together, your heart melts.

Whenever I watch this, I cry. This is one of my favorite movies ever. The saddest part (in my opinion) is when Quasimodo sees Esmeralda and I forget his name (after he was injured) together and he rips the heart card... TEARS TEARS TEARS

I don't know how this isn't even in top 5. I would say the number of times you cry in a movie, this would be top 3. Frozen and beauty and the beast does not even compare slightly to the sadness and tearfulness you get from this movie.
