Hard to categorize and I have lived here my whole life. Def. not outwardly friendly none of New England is in my opinion. Def. liberal leaning so you will be attacked verbally if you are conservative leaning esp at the liberal universities (I know I went to one and have worked at them for 16 yrs.) That being said while not outwardly that friendly I laugh at how some of the southern hospitality states have high crime rates and the south in general. New England isn't outgoing but it is one of the safest areas. However when visiting Colorado I had more strangers say good morning to me in one week than my entire life in MASS

I have lived here my entire life. I don't think the people go out of their way to be cruel to others. However, the people kind of stick to themselves. It is pretty common either to not know your neighbor or only know their name.

This is true. I was born in Massachusetts and found it tough to make friends. People do not trust each other. When I moved to Rhode Island I actually found people to be a bit friendlier, so I cannot understand why Massachusetts is ranked 13th and Rhode Island is 49th. - alg2468
