The townspeople are just hypocrites as usual, they always have to find a way to turn it back on people, ESPECIALLY Squidward, while yes he should not have read SpongeBob's diary and his personal diary, but they treated him like such a creep for reading a diary. But you gotta have some pity for the poor guy. Everyone treated him like a criminal, called him names, forced him to sleep homeless and arrested him. BRO you cannot even talk with him and tell him that he should apologize? And then he feels bad that he does so and everything goes back to normal? BUT NOO! It's SQUIDWARD! Had it been anyone else, and HE was the victim they would've tormented him like the hypocrites they are! Especially stupid fatso Patrick!
