Mitchell designed this plane based on seaplane entrants for the Schneider cup, which he won. He used this experience and knowledge of fast flying seaplanes to premiere a beautiful mobile and well flying plane, which is the only plane to have continued production from the start to the end of WWII. Emerging from the murk of an era of biplanes, this is the signature plane of the battle of Britain, which paired with the exquisite almost 2000 horsepower griffon Rolls Royce engines really pulled through. The Spitfire's wing design meant that it gave ample warning of a stall and, even when in a stall, the ailerons were still effective, so comparing statistics is not the whole story. Young inexperienced pilots (that's most of them) could fly the Spitfire to the limit with confidence, whereas with most other aircraft, only a really experienced pilot would dare to take his aircraft to the limit. Result: Spitfires could perform well irrespective of who flew them, other types were often not being flown to their full potential, unless in the hands of an expert. To talk about Rolls-Royce-engined Mustangs not coming on stream in numbers until 1944 is rather disingenuous. Great Britain was at war with Germany in 1939, and the Royal Air Force needed fighter aircraft to compete against Messerschmitts. Thus it was that the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane were borne. In 1940, those two fighter aircraft between them, defeated the might of Germany's Luftwaffe in what became known as The Battle of Britain. The greatest air battle of the war. That the outcome of the Battle prevented Hitler from invading Great Britain, which otherwise might have kept the USA out of the War, has to be the greatest point as to what was/were the 'best' fighter aircraft of World War Two. Surveys like this constitute opinion. What may be more interesting are the "wanna be" craft which never made it due to design, production and political problems. Interesting to see all these aircraft computer gamed in an impartial environment. Many times comparisons like these are classic "apples versus oranges" scenarios. In other words, one fights with what is given...even the Brewster Buffalo in the hands of Finn and Dutch pilots fared well against ostensibly better aircraft. An Australian Wirraway (down under version of the AT-6 Texan/SNJ/A-27) supposedly shot down a Zero over the Dutch East Indies. Still, one must start somewhere.

WHOEVER SAID SPITFIRE IS NUMBER 1 KNOWS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT COMBAT! First off some children here have stated that the Spitfire "Won the Battle of Britain"... Guess those idiots never studied WW2. Hitler lost the Battle of Britain when he went against advice and switched from taking out the RAF to bombing London. We know it was a fluke mistake that started the London then Berlin bombings but before that the RAF was on its last leg EVEN WITH THE SPITFIRE. There was nothing that the Spitfire did during this critical period that the Hurricane could not in more numbers. The Spitfire was actually under gunned, stalled due to poor fuel intake design, had poor landing gear like the 109, but could not sustain damage like the 109. Many British pilots agreed with the captured German pilots that the 109 was the better aircraft. The Spitfire was IN NO WAY A WAR WINNER. It was the prettiest but to me was flawed by it's lack of range and time over target. I was not aware it was faster than the P-51 I thought that the Me-109 had comparable speed with the Spirfire had the advantage of fuel injection and was superior in a climb. The P-51 was superior in range and altitude ( with the RR Merlin engine ) than either of the other two. Don't forget when Goering looked up and saw the P-51's over Berlin he stated the war is lost. My pick would have been the ME262 then the P51 then the Focke-Wulf 190. And in response to the American advantages you were doomed by being mesmerized by that Idiot Drug Addict all of you worshipped, hitler. If he let his generals free there may have been a different outcome. Fighting on two fronts because of this methed up psycopath did you in. This plane was definitely the best prop plane of WW2, combining agility, fire power and a powerful engine. american planes were usually slow and sluggish. German ones were reliable and had an excellent dive but in dogfights spitfire had the upper hand, french, Russian and Japanese planes aren't even worth putting on this list as they had major flaws, and the french were out of the war early on. Also it was incredible how it advanced from it early stages to what it became at the end of the war, 24 marks and many more sub versions in 6 years! - varikor

Each plane in Spitfire range had it's advantages/disadvantages and the evolution tended to mirror the needs of the time. For me the best Spitfire was the Mk 9 because it (just) matched or slightly exceeded the enemy threat of the time which was the early FW 190, but was easy to produce swiftly and in numbers whilst retaining the great handling of the earlier Mk's. Geoffrey Quill himself has stated the Mk. VIII was a superior fighting machine, BUT it wasn't available when needed. The Mk 24 May we'll have had a huge performance edge, but it's impact wasn't huge because it wasn't needed as desperately as the Mk. 9 at it's deployment.

There is so much rubbish spoken about the Mustang which to be honest I think is overrated. All it had over the Spitfire was range and stability. The Spoitfire was generally faster, had a much higher rate of climb, a faster roll rate and a faster turn. In short, the Spitfire was a thoroughbred dog fighter. The Mustang was a multi role combat aircraft. There was one American ace in WW2 (I think his name was Brown) who flew both types. He said that in a dogfight, the Spitfire would win 99 times out of a hundred.

The Spit spat all over the krauts. More agile than 109s they'd intercept them before they reached the Hurricanes and engaging them in twisty dogfight combat enabled the Hurricanes to take out the Nazi bombers. Job done. 109 kills a bonus, not the main task - That was to take out Bombers before they reached London or the industrial cities. Once the 109s had to turn back due to fuel limits the Spits could help clean up what was left of the Heinkels and Dorniers. The Spitfire was therefore the star of a two fighter tag team the Luftwaffe had not encountered in Spain or France and so not trained for or anticipated. The Focke Wulfe 190 was made in answer to this tactic but came too late to win them the BoB and used as more of a vengeance weapon.
