I am a Singaporean with a Chinese heritage, but I still suck at it.These are a few reasons why Chinese is so hard to learn:It has no alphabet.It's written form has no clues as to how it is actually pronounced.There are many homophones; the same phonetic sound can have a completely different meaning depending on context.All the words are only distinguishable by four tones, which only differ slightly in pitch and enunciation.There are about 8000 characters.So... actuaclly...EVEN CHINESE CANNOT SAY THAT THEY UNDERSTAND CHINESE VERY WELLoh, and, do you know that you're meaning mandarin, not Chinese?BECAUSE THERE ARE MORE THAN 40 kinds of language in CHINA and they pronounce NOTHING alike!NOBODY can TALK ALL OF THEM, EVEN Chinese!(at least they write the same)but trust me, you'll never get how write traditional Chinese, you can't even get to know what is simplified and what is traditionalIF YOU UNDERSTAND CHINESE SOOO WELL,get to see Japanese a bityou can't even tell the difference between them if you didn't learn chineseThere ain't even an ALPHABET.....heew, sorry for what I just say, I just have to say, this is a must- top language(no offence on what I just say)

我將在2個月學習漢語,在一年半,我將住在香港,必須說普通話!祝我好運吧!這將是一個真正的挑戰但是最終會非常有益!

I will learn during 2 months to speak Chinese and during one year and a half I will live in Hong Kong and will have to speak Mandarin! Wish me Good Luck! It will be a real Challenge but at the end it will be really beneficial!

I'm from China and Chinese is my first language whereas I'm still HORRIBLE at recognizing the Chinese words! I can't believe I'm better in English than Chinese and when it comes to four-word words I just suck so much everybody in my class beat me in this language :(

I am Chinese and learning Chinese is super HARD! Each word has a different symbol and you have to memorize each one. Also, some symbols are just slightly different so it's easy to mess up!
