Very few generals can boast having one so many pitched battles at such damning odds. Easily the greatest general many later generals such as Napoleon made use of his tactics and strategies, he fought at the front with his men regularly and would often rush in to personally repel his enemies when his defences were strained. He even created intentional weaknesses in his defense/ siege of Alesia drawing his opponents larger forces into a deadly trap. Added to this he was a brilliant military engineer. He did all this within the political and socially acceptable constraints of his day until he was forced to cross the rubicon to protect himself from prosecution at the hands of his jealous rivals who were frankly not upto his abilities he was as able in the law courts as Cicero spoke numerous languages and always attempted a peaceful approach before resorting to war. The ability to conduct a siege with the enemy in the rear is a rarity throughout history. Not to mention he took a weary roman army on the verge of collapse and beat an evenly equipped, larger force, under the leadership of the great pompey, who was using basically the same tactics.. #2

Here is why I think Caesar is the best military commander in history. If the earth would be under attack by alien forces, I would wish to revive Caesar to lead the resistance.On the most basic level, he was a brilliant leader of men. He knew every centurion of his army by name, and on more than one occasion his personal appearance on the battlefield saved the day. In fact, he was so beloved by his men that they would do literally anything he asked them for. When one of his legions tried a mutiny after the civil war, his sole threat of discharging them from his service stopped it already.Then, on the battlefield he was a brilliant general of troops.
