I get that this man rescued Vietnam and united the country, yet how is this a bigger achievement then Genghis Khan, an outcast who as a twelve year old was abandoned in the Mongolian plains, who then united the Mongolian tribes by himself, who then defeated and conquered most of Asia and Russia with an army who at the start of the conquest had never seen a stone wall before (the largest empire the world has ever seen at that), who then created a dynasty with the affect that 1 in 200 people on earth are descended from him. If Genghis hadn't got sick the whole of Europe and Asia would now be part of a Mongolian empire.

For me, greatness does not mean bringing army to conquer the whole world as well as war, blood and tears to mankind. Greatness is to lead a small nation to stand up to protect itself, to protect the good, to protect the righteous values with the most human-saving strategies. Vietnam's victories over the invaders of the US, France and China are not only for the people of Vietnam but they are also great encouragement for the slavery nations to regain independence and government for themselves. I love Vietnam, President Ho Chi Minh and General Vo Nguyen Giap!

He didn't attend any military academies. The battles of Napoleon were the only lessons he could learn from. General Giap is certainly is a competent General, but, he fought an offensive war in Vietnam without abiding to the rules of war. He did not win any basic battles in Vietnam. He didn't need to worry about rules of engagement as America did or not allowing US troops above the 17th parallel. or using other neutral countries to bring men and war supplies to the south. The only way he finally took South Vietnam was wait until the American's left and then Violate the Paris Peace Agreement.

He, who had deep understanding of military strategy, never went to any military academy.In 22-12-1944 he formed an army with 34 farmers/villagers -armed with only rifles and knives- the army which nine years later knocked-out the fully-equipped and professionally-trained French Army at Dien Bien Phu. The Vietnamese victory at Dien Bien Phu is the trigger for the collapse of the French Colonial system worldwide.In 1972, he led the Vietnamese Air force and air defense successfully repelled the US Line-backer Operation, resulted with 34 Stratofortress B52s and hundreds of other tactical aircrafts shotdown.
