Their music was nothing special take the popular song Paranoid for example very simple guitar and drums. They weren't really good musicians they were just OK. They have a cool name and Ozzy had an interesting unique sounding voice and persona that's it. The same with Dio. I'm tired of seeing all three Classic rock bands which now should be considered Antique Rock taking over all the top 10 spots. Oh they were so innovative and influential and if you didn't have them you wouldn't have the newer bands. Most of all the bands I listen to weren't influenced by classic rock bands anyway. Most of all the greatest bands ever came out of the 80s and 90s with the exception of the greatest most experimental most wide variety of sound band EVER the Cure.

Whatever Metal listing I go too, Black Sabbath is almost always at first place. Much of their songs are actually pretty boring if you ask me and Ozzy Osbourne at this point is more of a celebrity. And lastly, they never really invented Heavy Metal; it rather helped in developing the genre experimentally and commercially. They deserve some credit, that's for sure, but I don't consider them among Metal's best, even if they were among the earliest precursors. - CrimsonShark

Black Sabbath is great, and I don't think their overrated. I think deep purple should get more recognition though because them, sabbath and Zeppelin kind of created the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal. It seems as though people pay a lot more attention to Zeppelin and sabbath than deep purple. All three are great bands and deep purple deserves as much or almost as much recognition as sabbath and/or Zeppelin.

They're just NOT THAT GOOD. I'm dead serious. Their songs are dead simple. They rely on hooks. Dun dun - dun dun dun! Dadoodadoodadoo doo da da! Oh, what a classic.Just because they were the first metal band doesn't mean that they're anywhere near the best. Judas Priest was far better. Iron Maiden was far better. (Old) Metallica was far, far, far, far better.People need to learn that music isn't good because it's old. It's good because it stands the test of time and attracts new fans. There's kids grooving to Master of Puppets right now, and the last person that listened to War Pigs is what? 50?(Disclaimer: I don't mean anything derogatory towards older people. This is a critique of nostalgia, not nostalgi-ers.)
