Punk rock actually originated here in the U.S., mainly in Detroit and New York. So punk owes more to MC5, Television, and the Ramones (and the New York Dolls), than the Sex Pistols. I can understand how the Brits caught on to punk, what with the class system that plays a bigger role in the UK than here. But where British punk is concerned, The Clash were the better of the two. I would follow them with The Buzzcocks.

The Sex Pistols were embraced by British youth because the country was in deep depression with no future under a rotten Labour government. Most of the big cities were on rolling blackouts because of striking and no power available after working hours except for hospitals etc. No future for kids with unemployment at an all time low. Oil crisis. Unions striking everywhere.Sex Pistols just represented how kids felt. They could barely play their instruments and were mostly a carefully managed by Mclaren who made good use of sensationalist bad publicity to keep the momentum going.It crushed rock for a while until bands like Iron Maiden managed to surface from the quagmire. Though punk did have some influence of rock in raising the tempo. They were crap musicians and definitely overrated musically.

I'll admit they were definitely pioneers of punk rock. But they had one album for cryin out loud and they think they own punk rock by throwing shade at better bands like Green Day (who brought punk back to the mainstream). Johny Rotten and Sid Vicious were two morons who thought being ignorant, idiotic, drug overdosing and bad teeth were punk, not to mention Sid beat his wife. Like they are so overrated, cannot say this enough...The Clash, Ramones, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys: all better punk rock bands.

Easily the most underrated band of all time. Whilst Steve Jones, Glen Matlock and Paul Cook were all fairly talented, Sid Vicious was a talentless psychopath who only became famous because he looked the part and ended up killing his wife. And whilst Johnny Rotten (or Lydon or whatever he wants to be called now), wasn't necessarily a bad front man, he's since become the absolute antithesis of punk.

I was surprside to see this band eigth in this list because I'm probably one of the fews persons who think this band is criminally overrated. I will never understand the pride it gets. "because they r the pi0n33rs of ponk" no, they aren't the pioneers of punk music, a few punk bands existed before them. I guess the pride this band gets might be a bandwagon, am I right? Yeah, feel free to leave a butthurt response as you wish, make sure to tell how influential and how much punks they are only to convice me they are a good band. You will just waste your time because you won't change my opinion on this band.

I feel like a lot of the people commenting here don't get punk. It's supposed to be messy and not neccissarily the most technical music and punk doesn't need a traditionally good singer, that wouldn't fit. I'm not even a big sex pistols or punk fan but they aren't overrated. The people who like them enjoy their music and the people who don't like it don't have to listen to it. Nothing overrated there.

I might not be the best person to comment on overrated punk musicians, as I'm not a big fan of the genre. That said, I do appreciate a band with skill and talent, and the Sex Pistols lack both. Their vocalist can't sing and their production is average at best. While they did pioneer a movement, that doesn't make their music automatically good. - Mrveteran

None of them could play instruments which isn't a huge deal in a punk band, but there are no basslines in sex pistols songs even worth trying to play, they are non existent. Besides, how long were they together? Please tell me how they influenced music in a way that the Ramones didn't? And they did it for 20+ years.

Extremely overrated British band that for some reason represents the rock music of UK, despite their release of only one album, their childish hatred of everything, and lack of general talent.
