The Lord of the Rings has the best writing, plot, characters, complexity, and worldbuilding of any book ever written. It is both epic and realistic, both light and dark. It, and The Silmarillion, are the pinnacle of Fantasy. It deserves the #1 spot! The only reason it is second instead of first is because it's actually art, which is harder for big companies to get money from than cheap made-for-merchandise children's books, and it therefore is less often advertised.

I was split between this and Harry Potter, but what made me choose this is that this made a fantasy story span over the course of thousands of years, while with Harry Potter the timeline stretches about 50 years, I'm not saying Harry Potter is bad,(In fact, it excels in pacing sometimes) but The Lord of the Rings is a massive influence to all fantasy series being released today. While Harry Potter does a good job telling the story about a secret wizarding world, this series creates new races, new languages, and told an incredible story, Harry Potter is still amazing but it dwarfs in comparison to the world created by JRR Tolkien.

In addition, written in classic English prose with complex descriptions interspersed with detailed action-oriented segments. I will say the final battle in Harry Potter came close to the emotional content of the battle of Minus Tirith, but only close, not equal or superior to. And, the final segment of the Lord of the Rings in which the band of Hobbits must retake their homeland and the ring bearers depart Middle Earth has no parallel in Harry Potter.

BOY. JRR Tolkien made multiple translatable languages and has a literal history book on the fantasy world called The Silmarillion. What did JK Rowling do? Make like 2 interesting characters. Plus The Return of The King won the Best Picture award in 2003. How many of the Harry Potter movies got Best Picture award? NONE OF THEM. The Harry Potter series ended up getting a grand total of ONE OSCAR when The Return of The King literally won ELEVEN OSCARS which completely blows the whole series out of the water and that's not including any of the other movies so obviously if you voted for Harry Potter you've never read the LOTR series because it's probably too advanced for you Harry Potter fans.

If this book had never been written there may not be the fantasy we know so well today. This book which was later broken up into three different parts but made none the less epic, and I must say that even though John Ronald Ruel Tolkien passed away around fifty years ago, his fame still lives in every single book I pick up. I have to say all of the books on this list are great, but this book stands out to me a lot. I never have trouble finding it either in the library or the bookstore, so I say here and nw that this books deserves first place next to Harry Potter. The Lord Of The Rings is EPIC!

Although Harry potter and the others are great as well, I feel as if this book has a sort of magical feeling to it- a feeling I have never felt while reading any other book. Its beauty, its wonder... As I read I felt as though J.R.R. Tolkien poured his entire soul into this, and that the words he had written were straight from the heart. It is so simple, yet so complex at the same time and that often leaves me once again entranced by its beauty. I understand that for some it is a little difficult to read, and I felt that way as well at the beginning. But a few chapters in I found I could not put the book down- it had simply mesmerized me with the imagery, the voice, the tone, the characters and the beauty of all that is Middle-Earth. It is always hard to choose my favorite fantasy book, it's simply my favorite genre. But I thought, well, why not give the crown to the one that started it all? While I respect Harry Potter for what it is, It has never been as well thought out, as linguistically creative, or as inspiring as Tolkien's Legendarium. In my Opinion, this should be number one, not Harry Potter (but Harry Potter would deserve a place as number two). Tolkien did not only create a completely new world, but new races, languages and the most wonderful story I have ever seen in my life.
