Les stroud takes a smart and collected look at every survival situation I have ever seen him in. While most others run and jump into scenarios they may not be well suited for or do things out of shear spontaneity. To have bear grylls ranked #1 is a pure joke. His shows are phony and scripted. For example, watching him drink his own urine as a source of "hydration" was ridiculous. Stroud on the other hand teaches you how to use your urine to create clean drinking water. Just a small example, but if half of the people watched half the amount of survival shows and documentaries I have, its clear that les stroud is a knowledgeable survival expert who truly practises what he preaches through out day to day life.

I too am a survivalist. There are some big dogs on this list. I chose Les because he has proven that he can survive unsupported and alone which is much more difficult than having someone around for mental or safety support. I too often survive alone because I can't find anyone that wants to keep up with me. I think Les could teach me a lot and I believe I can teach him home things as well. I think we would make a great survival match and I hope to head out into the bush with him very soon. He is not glamorous but he knows how to get the job done and he fights his fears more than most. - W2

Why Les is easily the best survivalist celebrity:- He and his wife and now children have literally spent years living off the land in the bush- His home in the Canadian wilderness is totally off grid- He hunts and grows his own food- He practices what he preaches and actually lives the survivalist, prepper lifestyle- He comes up with many of his own survival techniques and doesn't simply just re-do the same old things- He actually puts himself into critical survival and potentially dangerous situations during his show unlike others who sleep at hotels, do flashy choreographed stunts with crews of safety people around them- He is not materialistic or in it for the money. Aside from pretty much T-Shirts and the odd book you won't find cheesy Survivalman merchandise and survival pants in major stores like some other stars- He films, edits, directs, hosts and produces the show himself and even writes and plays all the music- He presents his ... more

I used to have 3 websites in the niche "Survivalism" in Nature" "Off The Grid" living. I had to write blogs on the subject in my websites. Watching "Survival Man" on TV, I learned a lot of very useful information bordering on "Cool" from Les Stroud" his harmonica.

If we're going by T.V. show experts, Les is the man. He's the only TRUE survivalist on T.V.. Seven days alone and he films himself. All of those shots where you see him walking away means that he has to go back and get that camera or have a crew come after the period is over to collect it for him. Not to mention trekking around in every type of weather imaginable while filming yourself carrying 50 lbs of camera gear + your survival gear.In later episodes he has some back up and a radio, but it malfunctions sometimes and he is still very much alone in the elements.Long story short: no one else does it like he does: takes calculated risks, explains what he does and why, and truly showcases the hard, gritty, and lonely parts of survival.

Les is always about doing things in the safest and most efficient way possible to conserve energy, while trying to improve a situation at the same time. He's on his own without support to bail him out, and has made some mistakes along the way. But his methodical approach never puts him in a situation that he can't recover from, which is the point of surviving. Unlike some who do backflips out of 10ft high trees into a swamp to get out of the tree, or unnecessarily take on a creature the could hurt or kill them for food.

Survivorman was THE first survivalist show I have ever watched. I was amazed at what he did and how he did it. Watching him walk up and down a freezing mountain to get the shots was amazing to watch. When he goes on locations he's not familiar with, he gets the knowledge he needs from the locals, which is what any wise survivalist should do in the first place. His techniques are practical for what is available in his surroundings. He's an average guy like most of us and that appeals to all of us human beings.

I'm not familiar with a few of the men on this list, so I'll have to do some learning. That being said, I know most of their t.v. and Web content and have always been most impressed with Les Stroud. None of these guys and their accomplishments are without merit. Even Bear. Although highly scripted and dramatic, he is skilled. But Mr. Stroud is the most admirable to me on account of his views and tactics regarding survival. His methods are typically simplistic, effective, and easy to remember and apply. And he can rip up a harmonica pretty fair!Take your pick from this list of 10. For each one, there are a thousand others just as skilled who are unknown and prefer to remain so.I highly doubt there is a "greatest survivalist" among them, but instead a highly skilled group of individuals who are masters in their own methods. I'd be humbled to take instruction from any of them, even Grylls. But I'd definitely prefer to from Les Stroud!

Les was the original T.V. survivalist and I found his approach the best of all others mentioned combined, without the negatives. He's calm, pragmatic and very specific. He doesn't take those foolish risks nor does he walk around shoeless (no offense Cody, that's your choice, but not realistic for your average persons situation). Les keeps it very simple and easy to remember. I will always keep his wisdom in the back of my head. Thanks Les

Les Stroud has been willing to put himself in far greater danger than the other people mentioned here. His safety net is far far away, the other guy's is right there. Carrying all that camera gear makes it twice as difficult. And when he goofs up he admits it and it doesn't end up on the cutting room floor. You learn more from another person's mistakes than you do from their successes.
