Vermont is one of the least racist states in the continental United States. In my opinion, it could well be in the top 5. People are for the most part friendly and less "race-prejudice". People of diverse races mingle usually freely, despite the fact I consider most of this state country or rural. Well I am 100% Black, as "black as can be". I tell you that very rarely, did I even experience racism or racialism. This is in comparison to many states where I've been to. Perhaps it is also because historically Vermontwas one states in which did not take part in slavery. Many free Blacks or "free Negros" fled to states like Vermont in the 1800''s. I don't know, all I can say is that Vermont despite being the "Whitest" state in America or the second "Whitest", it is also one of the most racially tolerable. Oh well this is my experience in Vermont.

I am a brown immigrant (Middle Eastern) living in rural Vermont. It is one of the least racist places I've been in America. Initially I was surprised as the state is 97% white. People here work hard and everyone has treated us as equals. I have not heard any anti-Islamic or immigrant comments and feel almost no discrimination.I have also interacted with several Vermont Blacks and they have the same opinion as me.However, in one way I have found Vermonters may seem a bit racist - let me explain. Most of the blacks here are not multi-generational African Americans but African immigrants. In our rural community there are interactions with people from Africa (Ethiopia, Sudan, etc), but there is almost know interactions with African Americans from places like New York or Georgia. Due to this lack of interaction there is not much empathy for national African American causes. For this reason more liberal parts of the states might support BLM loudly while rural area's do not. ... more

Extremely racist state. If you are white you will be welcomed with open arms. If you are any other color period you will experience systematic racism from employment (no matter how qualified you are for the job) to even checking out a library book.Their "vehicle inspection" system is designed to weed out the "undesirables" by making cost of the repairs necessary to "pass" easily into the thousands. And since there is no adequate bussing system the commute necessary to make it to work is nigh impossible if you aren't a 9-5'er (see employment).

This is not "racism" my friend but a class system issue. However, yes, they are racist in other ways. Vermont loves Minorities for one reason. They will stick any Black Person on the front of a college or work catalog to show how diverse and PC they are...it's a joke. You need big bucks to make it in Vermont. - MRMY

I'm Mexican but I'm retiring I served my country The United States of America in the Army for 28 years I am proud of my race but I have only an American flag in my car and home. I was born in Chicago and love the snow so I want to take my Mexican wife and retire in Vermont it looks green and beautiful like the rolling country side of Germany. I hope the white people will accept me I love them and I work hard, I don't bother nobody and I don't drink my wife is now an American citizen and has graduated college working as an RDH, she's a good girl, Christian like me.

Its sad that you feel so proud to be a good 'boy' for the white quotmanquot. You highlight how you want to be accepted by white people and you did all the things you were supposed to in order to 'deserve'? Their respect. You went to the army, you work hard, you speak English and you are a Christian citizen, well good for you Mr. Good Mexican. Oh, and your wife is now a citizen lol! Good for Ms. Good Mexican. By the way don't you know a large part of this country whose flag you wave like a sick fanatic was inhabited by your native ancestors that you are inevitably mixed with prior to the establishment of this country and the creation of that flag? Have some self respect! A lot of people work hard. ALL people have a RIGHT To a DECENT LIFE! You don't have to prove your humanity to a race that wishes to dehumanize the majority of the world which is non white.

—chibiabos3586
I am assuming that when you say that you are "Mexican" and that you the "White people" accept you that are claiming that you are a non-Caucasian Mexican, correct? Let's not forget that there are too White Mexicans: Angelique Boyer, Luis Miguel, Guillermo del Toro, Elena Poniatowska, Santiago Creel, Carmen Aristegui, Belinda Peregrin, etc. True the majority of Mexicans are mestizo, but let's not forget that "Mexicans" are racist amongst themselves. Let's not forget the term "que naco! ", the racism towards the indigenous peoples that existed millenniums prior to the Spanish colonists and that many Mexicans believe that to "mejorar la raza" one has to marry a lighter skinned, "European-looking" person. - chibiabos3586

I lived in Burlington, Vermont and found it to be extremely racist. Although it is a college town, many of the uneducated and educated folks are ignorant. They boast diversity, but really they are wolves in sheep's clothing. The students of color at the University of Vermont were having a most difficult time, not just with the community, but with many of the professors. So Vermont is highly discriminatory in their practices. It is also the whitest state in America!

Just because there more of a white state doesn't mean it's racist I used to live there and honestly I wish I still did and I saw very little racist maybe Burlington I agree but every were else in Vermont Race doesn't matter - donovanthorn

I grew up in Vermont and I'm black, white and native American. I'm in my mid 50's now and the first time I ever heard a racist comment was when I left the state. I remember in high school the KKK came to New England to recruit new members. They were escorted out by the police as protesters ranted and yelled for them to leave and never come back. Vt is an independent state, an old hippie state and peace, love happiness is the norm.
