I've lived in 7 states and New York is probably the 2nd most racist of the 7 (#1 being Pennsylvania). Since minorities are often given preferential treatment under the law, there is a great deal of racism. For example, De Blasio, the mayor of NYC, recently proposed lowering the high school entrance requirements for members of the Black race and the Latino race, while keeping the same, higher standards for Whites, Asians, Indians, Native Americans and others. This creates undue tension amongst the races. People will know that Blacks and Latinos entered the school partially because of their race. Less people will hire Blacks and Latinos because the entrance standard for them is lower. As a Latino myself who went to one of these schools, I've already been, albeit jokingly, told that the fact that I went to one of these schools was sole because of my race and because the lower standards for my race meant that I didn't have to compete at the same level as Asians, Whites, Indians, etc. New ... more

I lived in New York most of my life and have seen people's lives destroyed because of racist legislative policies in regards to the courts and the police and their tactics. The poor and minorities are singled out for intimidation, harassment and abuse by law enforcement, especially if they happen to live in high crime neighborhoods. Most New Yorkers don't see color unless you are in their neighborhood, that is when color becomes an issue. The racism is systemic. It is not something anyone would admit to but it's reality is found in the lack of affordable quality housing, employment and education.

Long Island is still very racist and segregated. It's too bad because our real problem is poverty not race. - MRMY

I've lived throughout the east coast and sone of the Midwest as well as traveled out west. Upstate NY, farmland and military, is the least racist place I've lived. I've faced those who think I'm too white for my Mexican heritage and been called a racist because I turned down someone a half shade darker than myself, all in SC. In NY, I've never seen or heard that this is even a topic. Never knew that there was a race issue or that this could be a topic for discussing before leaving NY. I have a mixed family, my own and my step kids, there is nowhere we could be more comfortable or accepted then upstate nny.

While no state can claim complete racial harmony, it's true that most native New Yorkers simply don't care what race you are: problems arise from individuals mainly, and sometimes the less enlightened lump good in with bad. More problems arise from immigrants refusing to integrate: ignoring traffic/noise/overall consideration for others. They don't want to inconvenience themselves learning how to respect other culture's boundaries, which causes tension...

You never lived in the Deep south if you think New York is racist. Racism can be found anywhere but it is ingrained into the culture there. (Yes I have lived in both places) I was beaten in Texas as a child for being a "Damn Yankee" but treated well in Alabama when our car broke down. It comes down really to the individuals you come in contact with. I have met jerks in the North and South. Really, New York is not just the City and that is lost on many.

I've lived in NYC almost my whole life, I don't see why people would say is racist. Seriously? Come on people get it together haha. New York to me is the most diverse city in the world but that's just my experience. You learn so much about different cultures without needing to travel. I have friends that range anywhere from Asian to Native Americans and I'm not even joking. And for the the record, I'm Hispanic so I am a minority.

I've lived in wny my entire life and would say racism is light to mild but there are vast minorities so everyone has respect for each other if you show respect back. I think the buffalo area has a strong unity and most desire to be open minded and show respect

Been living here since I was born, no one here ever discriminates literally, never! Best state for immigrants since most come here and build the city.

I feel fortunate enough to have grown up in a culturally diverse region in Southern NY. I have seen and heard examples of racism, but the vast majority of people look down upon displays of such behavior, and can usually be attributed to misguided levity.I would attribute classism to being a more prevalent issue than overt racism.
