Swimming is most definitely the MOST demanding sport. I have been swimming for just over a year, and have worked my butt off, and am now at the level of swimmers who have been at it for years. Compared to other swimmers, our practices are relatively easy, and they ARE NOT EASY! Swimming uses every single muscle at the same time. Every set, you move your arms like lightning, every race, your legs feel like they are going to snap off. In a set, even if you are the fastest on the team, you swim a 200 sprint with limited breaths, and guess what, once you finish, you get 5 seconds rest and have to go and do it again, faster this time, than the absolute fastest you can go. Swimming is not just going back and forth, just like track is not just running around in circles. Swimming is the most physically taxing sport around because of you feel like you are about to die, go beat your best time in a 100 free. I have competed in soccer, football, baseball, basketball and even cross country, and I'll admit that they all have their challenges but they all fall short of swimming. Of course this website is 1000% biased because volunteerism processes never work in statistical studies, but I think I'll take a few seconds of my life to tell you that this is the hardest sport. I've surveyed 100 different high school athletes, and 89 of them said that swimming is the hardest sport. Not proof enough? Of course not. Swimmers on our team wake up at 4 AM 5 times a week for 3 months only to jump into a ice-cold pool and work our butts off for 1 1/2 hours and then after school it's back in the pool for 2 1/2 more hours with excruciating sets in which we swim just as far as the cross team runs (we're talking 8000-9000 yards a day). I am a triathlete. I do swimming, mountain biking, and trail running. I also tried skiing, snowboarding, tennis, and basketball. And in my opinion swimming is the most demanding out of all. Learning how to control your breath and keeping your heart rate down while moving almost every muscle in the body is very difficult to master. The thing is is your racing the clock. many times during practice, sets are based off of time. People who have swam a while know that these sets are not only one time. We do them maybe eight or ten times through, trying to make the set time already given to us. After a while you get really tired and do not get much break left, and only have maybe two or three seconds to catch your breath and go again. Swimming is hard because you can only breath during certain times, and it challenges your while body, mentally and physically.

Hardest thing you will ever do. Swimmers train more than any other athletes. Those who aren't swimmers this is how much most good swimmers train. Swimming is usually underrated on lists because people don't understand what it actually takes and they don't know what any good swimmers do to be where they are at.10+swimming sessions per week that go for well over 2hours each3-5 gym sessions per week about an hour and a half each session5 dryland sessions per week 45 mins each session(while it doesn't make it hard we also stretch for about an hour everyday, which doesn't make it harder but also adds to the time we spend on it)The amount of training we do is ridiculous and the intensity is worse I know of 8 and 9 year old kids who train 8sessions a week.And all the sessions which we do are unrealistically hard, we often have people pass out from exhaustion, spew up, finish unable to walk because water doesn't give us a barrier for us to stop when we ... more

In m opinion since I am a swimmer I think that this is the hardest sport. My friend and I had an argument about witch is harder hockey or swimming and hockey may be way more physically demanding than swimming but swimming is way, way, way more mentally demanding than hockey is.

Every practice I feel so numb and in pain, and get over heated. We also do BOTH dry land and training in the pool.People who say that there is no risk to get hurt are wrong, you can break your ankles, wrist, fingers, toes, arm, and cranium; you can get a concussion, rotor cuff injuries, (etc.)It is also very mentally challenging, you have to think about your dives, turns, strokes, breathing patterns, head position, kick, (etc.)Ive seen people quit swimming because its too hard and physically demanding.

I have been a swimmer for 7 years now, and when I joined my first team, well I literaly passed out in the water and the trainner had to dive in and get me. People think oh you swim, that's a dainty little girls sport. I had someone say this to me at a pool so I had him join my swim team. Lets just say he droped out after the first 2 days with a new respect for swimmers. Not only is swimming phyaicaly taxing but it exsersizes your brain a lot. Here let me put it into perspective, we have to focus on breathing, our time, people one both sides of you, your technique, your kick, what your trainer is signaling you to do, how to not use up all you energy and prolong it throughout the race, and finaly more likly then not your paying atention to what place your in! If you see this and are like why the heck is swimming ranked so high... well try it for your self, because if you are doing swimming right no matter your physical condition you will get tiered and sore FAST!

I just joined this year as a sophomore. I've done hockey which of course very very challenging and also lacrosse which is demanding as well but swimming is a whole different challenge. You have to use so many muscles and its one of the only sports you get yelled at for breathing. It's an insane sport and I'll never underestimate another swimmer again

When someone tells me swimming is easy, I just give them the look like that meme where the girl gets told the same thing, because its not easy. You have to train 20 hours a week or more if you are at Olympic level in the pool, not to mention all the dry land stuff and the running for your legs. It all pays off though, because going to a high level competition and winning is such a good feeling. Trust me I know
