It is interresting to note that the word "Commando"', frequently used around the world to denote a special forces soldier was actually derived from the Afrikaans word "Kommando", a term used during the war between Boer and Brit (1899 - 1902). The useless trivia aside, South African special forces, locally known as the Recces, should surely rate amongst the finest on the globe.Recces specialise in unconventional warfare and undergo some of the harshest training conceivable. Skill sets include sniping, underwater demolition, bushcraft, small-unit tactics, HALO and HAHO parachuting, counter terrorist operations and the collection of battlefield intelligence behind enemy lines.They are trained to operate and survive in urban and rural areas of Africa, far from logistical or operational support and without the luxury of giant conventional forces to back them up if the crap hits the fan.
