Idaho can be extremely racist and very far right. I have lived or visited all parts of Idaho my whole life as I'm only 15 and there's very popular road trip destinations. However, I have found that in Boise, and Sun valley. Arguably the states two most popular cities/towns outside of McCall. They are extremely left and not racist. I have not personally been affected by this as I am 15 and white. But I believe if you live in the right parts of Idaho such as Boise, Sun Valley, even McCall. You can enjoy the great wonders of the state while still being treated fairly and the same as everybody else.

I am a Hispanic and have lived in Idaho since 1960. I moved here partly to escape discrimination and racism in Texas. That was a mistake, I have been subjected to the same old racism and disparity I.e. second class citizen status, I have experienced throughout my 77 years on this earth. In the last few years I have witnessed the intensity and pervasiveness of racism and discrimination increase significantly. Due to two primary reasons (1) the tremendous influx of people into Idaho from all over the U.S. (Idaho has become a Mecca for racists and bigots) and (2) the political make up of local, state, and Federal government. We have shifted from a balanced moderate Republican/Democratgovernment body to a right wing Republican form of government. That has been detrimental to all minorities.

Idaho is the safe haven for retired racist cops, white nationalist militias, and old school racists, especially in the northern part of the state where many of the residents believe in creating an ethnostate. My last name is Bergman, which is Swedish, but while driving from Spokane to Kalispell, some loser asked me if it was Jewish with an incredibly aggravated tone, and didn't seem to believe me when I explained what it was, something is wrong with this place.

I'm biracial (white mom black dad) and my experience in Idaho has been awful. Someone made up a rumor that I'm secretly rich and the whole town starting harassing me. I grew up extremely poor. I'm a single woman with one income and I live paycheck to paycheck. My hair is talked about constantly. Someone I used to work with asked to borrow my curling iron. For a while I was a housekeeper and someone was throwing tobacco in the urinal that I had to clean. Someone else said to me "where were you? I had to pick up liter." Three men tried to walk into my house in broad daylight. I wasn't offered a PO Box even though everyone else in town had to have one. I was only told I needed one when I started packing an electricity bill. The bookkeeper "forgot" to do payroll 4 or 5 times. Once on a holiday weekend. I barely had enough money to make it until the following Tuesday. People would say awful things about me loud enough that I could hear. Most people gave me dirty looks. When I posted ... more

Idaho should be MUCH higher on the list. It is because there are so few black people here; their stories aren't being told. I have a friend whose coworkers call her "Monkey Face," and when reported, they were not disciplined. A black child in our dance group was asked if she "can go to the movies" because of the color of her skin. Two back children I know of have had to drop out of the public school system and home school because of bullying. This is an awful state if you are a person of color. It is pervasive and there is no community you can move to here. It's one thing if the "north and south are segregated," but in Idaho there's no blessing of segregation; it's all one hostile community. The whole state is a backwards white camp. Tell your story and get Idaho at the top of the list.

I am a professional who worked there for a short time. I am extremely competent but I am of color. My clients called me "colored" and every single one of them was white. I was discriminated against, being used and abused by my employer. My employer is under investigation by the Federal Government for their actions towards me. Please save yourself the hassle, finances, and heartache this state may cause you as a person of color. This state does not belong in the United States of America after my experiences in other states filled with diversity. Idaho was a white and cold sample of hell may be similar to.

I'm a white gay atheist in North Idaho, so at least I can hide behind machismo. Anyone who isn't white here has to deal with quite a lot.It can be horrific what people will say when you don't think you will be offended ("I'm just saying it's weird that ebola is only happening in places without Jesus"), and how it can feel to be an outcast. But again, I can hide myself to fit in.People up here generally do not self - identify or realize how socially backwards they R. It's amazing amazing how many people were against Obama before he was elected, but are somehow, "Not racist."One big thing I've noticed noticed is that the majority white people up here are against interracial marriage. Or maybe I'm confusing the fact that most people have only dated, married, and bred with other white people as something it's not. - Captainadorable

I'm sorry you have to go through, and see all that up there. It must be heart breaking, to see how cruel some people can be. You say that you hide being gay up there? Well the things that you know they would do to you or say to you, things that you fear witch causes you to hide who you really are, is what we African Americans actually go through on a everyday base for more than a decade.

I've lived in Idaho for 21 years! This state is very racist! To much time in this toxic infected state! I've gotten hate crimes at least twice a month, every month. They wave the confederate flag as much as the racists down south. If you are African-American, I would keep on going past when you see that sign "Welcome to Idaho" because it's a crap state! People won't often openly say racial slurs until after they get to know and as soon as they see skin color, of not only black people, but Latins/Mexicans they unleash a whole new world of hell. This state shouldn't be rated at the 17th state! Who ever says that this state is not racist is lying to themselves and you. People have followed me through grocery stores and out to my vehicle. When they see a "person of color" they automatically stereotype and when ever the black community riots because of some kind of injustice, the white people here approach us few colored folk and lecture us on how black people should behave as if we ... more
