Um, I have lived in Utah my whole life, and I have no idea where you guys were, but it is NOT racist. I know a guy who is CHILEAN and doesn't encounter any racism. All the blacks that I know are not the subjects of a cult, but they're my friends. Yes, we have crazy drivers, but that's not because we're racist. I've rarely seen any racism and when it does happen, people disapprove. And, if you think that the LDS church is a cult, y'all are crazy. Plus, they aren't even discriminating, Utah was one of the first states to allow women to vote (before the government came in and took that privilege away). Please reconsider that Utah just maybe is not racist or weird or whatever crazy things that people say. - Trash_Lasagna

I've lived all over Utah. I'm not black or brown, I have light skin but definitely not white. White people here will stare at you as long as you're not white. It's either the stare or being nosey, staring in your car or through your window and watch you. They do it to gossip and judge, the reason I know this is because they do that"small town" loud whisper, where they want you to kind of hear but they're gossiping with their friends. No matter how nice I try to be, they give me the disgusting look of hate that I'm very familiar with with these racist religious people. On a regular basis I'm stared at and they don't look away when caught. Utah people have such a serious staring problem and if you Do ANYTHING they have something to gossip about. I don't dress weird I dress normal like anybody else, it's the fact that I'm not white. The other thing is, I get ignored when I'm eating out with my family or friends. They don't look at me or talk back when I order, they take my order and say ... more - miklou

I actually have a lot of Mormon friends, although I am not Mormon, I am Southern Baptist... but I am whiteI used to attend church with my Mormon friends and they were cool with me...I stopped attending with them but they remained cool with me and often bug/annoy by email/social media to come back and see or hang out with them, but they're still cool with me......Pretty sure being white helps with that lolIt's ironic b/c it's kind of like in Minnesota where Mormonism/Utah is basically just a "cover up" for racism against blacks and Mexicans lolI mean it's obvious when my white Mormon friends would invite me over to spend the night, play ball with them/frisbee, while just barely knowing me off the batWhite privilege is pretty sweet lol - truthteller74

This is the most racist state in the west, by far. Almost every time there as a tourist; hiker, 4x4 touring, skiing and mountain biking I have seen it. Just for having facial hair! Locals have turned their backs to me if I ask a question. Even simple questions such as is this the mountain biking trail head. Last time there I picked up a Navajo hitchhiking. He had been walking for 30 hours yet no Utahns would pick him up. On a ski trip there in my 20s I asked a young waitress where to have fun at night. She said, '"You wanna have fun, go to Colorado". She was right! However the skiing and mountain biking are great. Also the worst state for road kill as they just don't build game fencing around highways. Arizona, California and Idaho should all be lower on the list than this state.

I've lived in Utah for going on eleven years and, as an educated man of African descent, I can justifiably say that the prejudice here is strong, the racism is systemic, and culturally ingrained. I am often defined by the color of my skin and treated poorly or alienated for it, especially when I don't live up to the stereotypes that inform the ignorance of those who seek to describe me. "Hey who's your favorite artist? " I might be asked. "Oh, I really like Maynard Keenan (Lead singer of rock band "Tool" for those who aren't sure)," I might remark. GASP! "But you're BLACK! You're supposed to like Lil Wayne," or whatever. They will do everything they can to cast a non-Caucasian person in an inferior light. An Indian man can say: "There are five flowers in a vase," and be scoffed at. A Caucasian man can say "There are five flowers in a vase," and recieve a gold medal. They are extremely passive aggressive and covert about it, but any person of deeper tones who has been the victim of ... more

So I am an active member of the Mormon faith living in Utah. I am deeply offended by the comments that say we are a cult and worship devils etc. However, as a military brat that has lived in other states, I can honestly say that the total lack of cultural diversity in most cities and towns in Utah should definitely make it at least a top ten if not a top five racist state. It is true that if you are not white or Mormon you will be pressured to conform to the culture or leave. Which is why as soon as I get my University Degree I am moving to a more diverse state.

A very strange place indeed. After 5 years in SLC, I still don't have likeminded friends. It's a boring place and people seem to be scared of foreigners. The looks are rather annoying.I sometimes wish they'd find themselves in a foreign country just to get those xenophobic looks from regressive people. Gays here discriminate, too.You invite them somewhere via text, they dismiss your messages like you're some kind of a weirdo. People here are passive aggressive and close minded. One needs to have strong nerves to live amongst these people.Mormons certainly rule the place and they believe in all sorts of crazy things. Thanks for reading!

Sat Lake City is also full of racists. Simply visit Utah for a few weeks and move on. It's lame and depressing in here. You have all these older Mormon men giving you the weird looks, like you're invading their city whatsoever. I constantly feel like I am a treat to them. Personally, I think Utah must be number 3 or 4 in this chart. Certainly before California.Xenophobes all over the place. The younger, progressive ones think they're accepting and all, while most of them have obviously inherited their ancestors xenophobic tendencies. They always hang out amongst their little, grungy circles, and never invite you to events. Also, Utans are very sensitive to sharp humor, or conversations even slightly out of their comfort zone. These people love small talk. They can discuss their favorite coffee flavor, or sandwich bread with excited, high-pitched tones for hours. Going though all the necessary and unnecessary details. Also, Utahans love to punish you, and ... more

I was raised in Utah and have only lived elsewhere for five years of missionary and military service. When I was very young racism was normal here. I didn't even realize that the racist phrases I was repeating as a child were wrong at first. As the civil rights movement began to dominate the news most of my relatives gradually moved away from our bad habits. I hope I did, anyway. Experiencing mixed races for the first time in military training was a real wake up call, seeing how little color, race, or religion had to do with a person's character. I realized that many of my fellow Church members and neighbors had not really understood the teachings of our Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (we are all God's children and should not judge others). Many, but not all, of my relatives and fellow Utahns have made a lot of progress, but not nearly enough to please me.There is a lot of prejudice here lately against immigrants and Muslims. A lot of it comes from the ... more

Utah is very racist. From my experience, I lived in downtown Salt Lake City for 4 1/2 years. In the upper class commonly wealthy area referred to as 'The Avenues'. I hated living there. It's so boring and depressing. The city shuts down at 9 P.M. the white people are rude, racist, think they're superior amongst other races. And it's funny how they are so racist towards black people when Utah has one of the highest adoption rates in the nation. And hey this...THE CHILDREN THEY ADOPT ARE BLACK! ' That's insane. If you're not Mormon and white you're treated as an outcast. Being black attractive and successful in Utah will outcast you as well. The blacks that are there and happy have either been adopted and raised by a black family. Married into a write family and converted to Mormon religion. It's a cult! The people run the state of Utah. Let's put it out there. The white men own their businesses. Build their own homes. While the women stay home barefoot and pregnant all the time. ... more - Anti-Utah
