I was born in Hawaii myself, and I have some serious issues with people who are racist.For example, I'm a part of Hawaii's majority race-wise, but I remember that my grandfather called out a Portuguese person in a parking lot for simply EXISTING. People posting here seem to have a wrong misconception of how things here work. 1. Haole means no breath. This definition originated when westerners first came to Hawaii and would not do the ha, or the exchanging of breath, which was understandable, they didn't know what it was. People of European descent are called haole because of this. 2. Almost all of the racism in the state stems not from rude locals who just want to be mean, the Hawaiian people are jaded and hurt because western influence nearly destroyed our culture. White people are scowled at because they come here and buy all the land and destroy the environment, thusly hurting our people even more. The Hawaiian people did not want to become a state, colonizers overthrew our kingdom and did not give the natives a right to vote. When we were voted to become a state, it was the white people who came here and took our land and our language and our culture that chose for us to become a part of this broken, bigoted nation. - pkainoac

How is Hawaii not first? If you are white, there are going to be a lot of people here who DO hate you. Many people like to claim that people here only dislike "ignorant haoles (white people)", but in reality, a lot of view people view white people as ignorant simply because of the color of their skin. The racism I have seen and heard on these islands has been absolutely disgusting. To make matters worse, it is practically enforced by a lot of state officials, as many will actively fight any racism they perceive against people with native Hawaiian blood. But as soon as an incident springs up against white people (which is literally all the time), it goes ignored most of the time because of the double-standard. First of all the island of oahu is crowded as hell. I grew up there and its not the same as it was 10-15 years ago. The tourist industry is what runs the state and ther is no problem with that. The problems come when people visit and don't leave when they are done. Oh also other states sending their homeless people to Hawaii. Our beaches have turned into homeless camp cities because some states to lazy to fix its own problems. So when your neighborhood gets run over by some Japanese business trying to build a hotel, or up till three in the morning because some rich white kids parents sent him to college here and likes nothing more than to wreak havoc and have parties then yeah the prejudice starts. And guess what? Its not just me. There are thousands of residents who are sick of the inconsiderate a-holes who show up in the state and cause problems. Born and raised in the bay area -- lots of ethnic diversity (though not as much as Hawaii). I lived in the bay area for 15 years, Reno Nevada for 13 years, Tokyo Japan for 5 years, and Honolulu for the last 6 years before coming back to the mainland a couple months ago, and I have to say Honolulu struck me as being very race-focused to say the least. There's a unique culture there due to their history whereby they make fun of other races and to them it's comedy. If you're not used to it it can definitely give you a bitter taste. The kind of racial jokes they make their on radio shows and even T.V. news would get people instantly fired on any channel/station on the mainland - and they're completely unapologetic about it. They have a racial slur for white people, "Haole", that is kind of like how mainlanders 50 years ago or more would call black people the 'n' word...
