New Mexico is extremely prejudiced, if not racist. When I was at the Gallup mall, I was the only white person there (besides the manikins),and the Hispanic and Native American people who lived there stared at me with looks that freaked me out. I have never been able to spend a peaceful night in New Mexico without fearing that I will be robbed or worse. In Albuquerque, I stayed at a fairly nice hotel- and I was the only white person there. When I got into the pool, everyone looked at me suspiciously. As I was getting things out of my truck, I could see faces in the windows watching my every move. The other guests at the hotel were obviously stalking and watching me. Thankfully, the Hispanic manager was very nice and very friendly, but his guests scared me so much I had to leave early. I am thankful for people like that manager, who don't "judge by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." It pains me that their are so many stories even worse than mine. New Mexico is not that racist! I am a Native American and never once have I ever been treated differently. There are some kids who are willing to learn. Not all of us Native Americans have low education. There are some of us that actually try hard. But the people that are not from New Mexico always has something to say against the Native Americans. We should be respected especially the Navajos. They are the reason why we won WW2 with our unbreakable language. Us Native Americans don't get treated with that much respect or given a chance because the teachers or whoever don't believe in us.

I was born and raised in New Mexico. For the most part the state is not racist. But like with all states there are the small towns that are less educated and racist. But I'm from a smaller town and our High School has all different races and everyone is accepted. Everyone gets along for the most part. I have done my fair share of traveling among the US and New Mexicans are by far the politest people. I am currently in small town in Montana and you would think I was carrying a severed head on my shoulder. (I am a 30 year old Hispanic woman)

This is "Indian Country. " It's supposed to be the state - one of them, anyway - in which Native Americans with higher educations CAN get jobs. So far no dice. There is supposedly "Indian Preference" in hiring even math teachers which I have a license to do from the state of New York. So far that must apply only to Gallup, in Navajo Country. I don't know. Every time I go to Albuquerque I get treated like "black" instead of Choctaw Indian and have to almost FORCE people to stop doing that and by now, I'm starting to let into people EACH AND EVERY TIME which I admit makes ME look like the "savage". I got pulled over on the highway for allegedly "going too slow" which was really a "driving while Indian. " I had to, again, threaten a Racial Profiling lawsuit to get that thing dismissed. Have lived in NM for 26 years now. Very diverse state but Hispanics here are very racists if you're Caucasian. They are mostly friendly to your face and then talk about you behind your back. Been called Wedo so many times it's comical. If you're married to a Hispanic, even your in-laws make racist comments about white people right in front of you, oblivious to the fact that there is one in the family and their grandkids are part white as well.

Every state you will always find racism, some more than others! I would live in New Mexico for the year round nice sunny weather in Las Cruces and the balloon fiesta in Albq. Plus, the food is great, red and green chillies... Good and bad people in all walks of life, do not judge an entire race! Hate is just like *CANCER*, it will get into you and destroy you! Life is very precious people, be happy, enjoy each day and try to smile even though you might not want to, try to have an open mind to see the good in people and not always all the bad! Sadly, racism will never go away, no matter what state that you live in... New Mexico is a pretty cool place, some parts better than others. Do your research on NM before you make a choice, again, Las Cruces is a great place, and very close to El Paso, TX which is a cool town as well! Great weather year round in both places and low cost of living.
