The western fear of Russia that started in the beginning of the 18th century pretty much explains itself, but even earlier through all history of the Russian nation it was surrounded by enemies, and and fighting never ending invaders while it never had a real ally (while it had "situational allies" and like "common enemy allies" the enemy of my enemy is my friend type) and later with the west that was always trying to sabotage Russian development in different ways (a good example is England).With all this Russia managed to survive as a strong power, develop a rich culture and its scientists were always among the best in the world.While the soviet union did a lot of horrible things and many people see it on par with Nazi Germany its people and army managed to defeat a stronger invader same as with napoleon which were the strongest armies in the world in their time, later became a superpower that lasted through half of the 20th century bringing huge developments in ... more

The world would be a very different place if it wasn't for Russia, if you take butterfly effect into consideration than the influence this great nation had on our planet is impossible to measure or even comprehend. Things like the space race for example, a lot of people when they think space technology they only think about the astronauts floating on the space station taking photos. There is actually a tone of technology breakthroughs that came from all over the world thanks to the space race in the 60's. Anyway that's just one example.
